Biggest 2019 Sporting Events Happening In Hamilton

The city of Hamilton in New Zealand will host some great sporting action this year. Ranging from rugby to football, there will be something for everyone in this lovely city. We have put together a list of some of the amazing sports events that we think you should attend. Relay For Life

This is a charity sports event that is geared towards raising money for the Cancer Society to deliver essential services to people grappling with this deadly disease. Relay for life is a fun sporting event that involves relay races around the oval at the Claudelands Grandstand. Teams can choose to either walk or run; and can comprise of workmates, family members or friends. Relay for life is organised by the Cancer Society of New Zealand and is specifically intended to help people who give care and support to cancer patients. This year, the relay event will take place on the 30th of March between 10 am and 10 pm. Apart from the sporting activities; the event will also feature music and entertainment.

YONEX Waikato International 2019

The YONEX Waikato 2019 is a Badminton World Federation International Series event that will bring together local and international badminton athletes to compete. The outcome of the series will affect the world ranking points for these events and therefore the event is expected to attract some of the best athletes in this sport from across the planet. The Yonex Waikato International 2019 is organised by the Waikato Badminton Association and is scheduled to run between the 28th of March and the 31st of March at the Eastlink Badminton Stadium in Hamilton East.

Investec Super rugby Action

On the 19th of April at the FMG Stadium, the Gallagher Chiefs will go up against the British and Irish Lions. It will be a night of scintillating rugby action as these two teams go head to head. Kick-off is expected to be at 7.35 pm and tickets to this incredible rugby game are available at the Ticket Direct New Zealand website. This game will be one of the several encounters these two teams have had in the recent past. In the most recent game in 2017, the Chiefs lost to the Lions in this very same stadium in Hamilton.

4Seasons River Run/Walk

This fun run/walking event is one of the highlights of Hamilton’s running scene and takes place along the scenic Waikato River. The event follows paths and trails along the river and stays off the main roads. This adds an element of adventure and fun to the event while ensuring that participants get to enjoy great scenery and commune with nature. The Waikato River Run is organised by 4-Seasons Events and will run on the 6th of April 2019. More details about the event and registration can be found on the company’s website.

Wednesday Club Nights

Organised by the Hamilton BMX club, this series of events will run from March to April at the Hamilton BMX club grounds in Hamilton. The events feature fun bike competitions and socializing, and are a great way for BMX enthusiasts to meet and have a lovely time together. All riders must be properly dressed and safety gear such as helmets will be available for hire for those who don’t have their own.

Ladies Social Cycling

Although non-competitive, this cycling event is guaranteed to be great fun for participants. The event brings together female cyclists across different ages for a day of fun, networking, and exercise. Most of the riding is done off-road so make sure you have dressed appropriately. Beginners need not be afraid as there are easy routes designed with you in mind. This way, you can begin your cycling journey and build up to riding on longer and harder routes. Ladies social cycling will run on various days from March to April at the Hamilton Gardens and admission is free.

Hamilton Half Marathon

The Direct Group Uniforms Hamilton Half Marathon will run on the 29th of September this year and features three races namely a half marathon race (21 kilometres), a 10 kilometres event as well as a 5 kilometres event. These races are designed to accommodate people at various stages of their running prowess. This event is a charity event and is organised by the Fitness Action Charitable Trust that aims to encourage healthy living through sporting and other activities. Kids are not left out either as there will be a kids’ commando challenge designed to get the kids to join in the fun as well. The event will take place at the Flagstaff Park.

Social Sports @University of Waikato

This is a mix pot of various sports events taking place at the University of Waikato. Running on different days until October, social sport is a sporting program that provides indoor and outdoor leagues across the year. Participants who sign up for the program can compete across different disciplines such as netball, basketball, and many others. The event is open to sportsmen and women in different stages of their sporting careers. This ranges from newbies to professionals. More information is available on the University of Waikato website and the event is organised by the university’s sports department.

Equidays 2019

This is an event for horse lovers and brings together all things Equestrian under one sporting event. Apart from competitions, Equidays is also about teaching Equestrian enthusiasts everything about horses and it is a great place to meet experts across various equestrian sporting disciplines and to learn a thing or two about the sport. There will be elite competitions, night shows, educational workshops as well as exhibitions. Equidays will run at the Equidays Mystery Creek between the 18th and the 20th of October. The event is organised by the New Zealand National Field Days society.
