Then, until the 1930s, a broader national focus was adopted, and the name changed to Dominion Museum. More art was introduced, and a new building created.  The name was changed again to the National Museum in 1972. But by the 1980s, the collections had outgrown their building and diversity suffered. Construction began for a new building in 1994, and new areas of focus were defined. Finally, Wellington’s Te Papa opened in 1998 and has, since then, hosted millions of locals and international visitors.

Except for Christmas Day, the museum is open from 10 AM to 6 PM every day. And though some charges do apply to certain activities or short-term exhibitions, basic entry is free of charge.
